L2
What is L2?
It is a learning program centred around three themes, I-Learner, Team Learner and 21st Century Learner. Currently at Qems we are teaching L2 to year 7 and 8 once a week.
‘I never teach my pupils; I only attempt to provide the conditions in which they can learn’.
Albert Einstein
We think Einstein was onto something, we want to encourage students to be entering into discussions about their learning, because learning is a process of discovery. It involves a set of principles and skills which, if understood and used, help learners learn more effectively and so become learners for life. At its heart is the belief that learning is learnable.
Our aim is to make learners aware of the following knowledge
• Circumstances of learning
• Methods of learning
• Social construction of learning
• Motivation to learn
• Model of learning
Our aim is to encourage learners to use the following attributes
• Resilience
• Resourcefulness
• Responsibility
• Reasoning
• Reflection
Our aim is to give learners the opportunity to demonstrate the following skills
• Locate and sort information
• Organise and make sense of information
• Judge the worth of information
• Transfer information
• Innovate
In year 7 students learn what good learning looks like, and are presented with some tools for their learning tool box to transfer into other subject areas, tools such as Kipling’s Questions, Blooms Learning Thermometer, and the Thinking Hats. Students will also know how to demonstrate the 5 R’s within their learning and how to look after their brains.
In year 8 the focus moves to team work, and with the help of team ninja students learn about different team roles and which ones suit them best. Students are presented with a series of challenges that they must complete including ‘The Ancient Legend of the Sacred Orb’ and the B.S.F Diorama.
