English at QEMS
Here at QEMS, The English department believes in inspiring our pupils to be creative as well as helping them to be functional in the ever changing and more challenging world. Our aim is to ensure that all of our pupils have their learning matched to their personal needs, whilst enthusing them about the possibilities of English.
Currently in Years 7, 8 and 9 our pupils are given opportunities to study a wide range of literature from the classics, including Shakespeare to a more modern selection of texts such as ‘Private Peaceful.’ We cover prose, poetry and drama texts so our pupils can develop an understanding of all the forms of English Literature as well as enhancing their skills of interpretation-a vital skill. Throughout Key Stage 3, our pupils are taught how to communicate in writing, as well as in speaking and listening.
During Key Stage 4, pupils will follow a course, which suits their specific needs, such as following a combined course of GCSE English Language and GCSE English Literature or a more specific focus on the area of GCSE English with elements of Literature built in.
From September 2010 we will also be introducing the option of BTEC Media, which will be a practical course focusing on the production of a variety of different products created in a variety of different media, including moving image and print. Certification for the award of First Certificate will be achieved by the end of Year 11.
At A Level we offer English Literature which encourages our pupils to get creative! They study a range of texts such as the modern and powerful novel ‘The Kite Runner’ through to texts considered classics such as ‘The Great Gatsby.’ Our course has always been popular with pupils; as well as studying some fascinating texts our students also develop some key skills which prepare them for higher education.
