Design Technology

In Design and Technology at QEMS we believe in inspiring pupils, encouraging them to be innovative and helping them to achieve their personal best.

Pupils combine practical and technological skills with creative thinking to design and make products and systems that meet human needs.
Our aim is to ensure that all pupils, through the use of current technologies and personalised learning are able to work creatively, safely and independently.

Currently in years 7, 8 and 9 our pupils have opportunities to work in five material areas: - Food, Textiles, Resistant Materials, Graphics and Electronics. Pupils design, make and evaluate in each area; providing them with the experience of working with a wide range of tools/equipment and materials.

At key stage 4, pupils have the opportunity of opting for one or more of the following GCSE Design Technology courses:-
  • Food Technology
  • Textiles Technology
  • Design Technology Graphics
  • Design Technology Resistant Materials
  • Design Technology Electronics
These courses are very popular and allow pupils to specialise in their preferred material area.
Each of these courses provides pupils with the opportunity of designing, prototyping and making, developing creativity and independent working skills.
At A level we offer Product Design, which encourages our pupils to get innovative!
Students study anthropometrics, ergonomics, aesthetics, trends and marketing in order to develop a product. Students take part in an exciting innovation challenge which forms a key part of their assessment at AS level and go on to design and make a product of their choice, working in their preferred material area.
